Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad: Making The Switch From Traditional Cosmetology to Pet Grooming
Meet Rising Star and Paragon Certified Professional Groom Tech Emily Burke of PetSuites in Fishers, Indiana! Emily came to grooming from the cosmetology field, and while there are many similarities, there are considerable differences too. It can be difficult to “unlearn” things, but Emily makes it look easy, and we’re so happy she’s finding success!
Jen McCarthy wanted to add, “She was an excellent student! She asked questions when needed, always would check in with me to let me know where she was with the program, and always took feedback and applied it to her next dog. She got awesome grades on her coursework and strove for perfection on her photo submission tests, too. So proud of her!”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I have always had love and a passion for animals. I wasn’t sure what type of career I wanted but I always knew I wanted to work with animals. I am a licensed cosmetologist and had worked at salon working on men and women’s hair. Although I did enjoy some of it, I knew something was missing. I knew I would be much happier and enjoy making dogs beautiful, so I decided to make a leap and trying grooming. I am absolutely loving it and I am very happy with my choice.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I enjoy learning trimming and the art of it. It takes patience and practice. It is an art form and I love watching the body be sculpted. I also just love spending time with the dogs. They make me very happy.

What are your future goals?
I hope to build up a strong clientele and continue to better my skills. I hope to be able to take on a decent amount of work while providing quality results. I hope to see my clients walk out happy with a smile on their face.
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It is hard work but with patience and practice the work can be done beautifully. It is an art form and it is talent. Be proud of yourself no matter what.
