Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad: Lifelong Aspirations Become Promising Grooming Journey
Meet Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad Alexis Derrigo of Pet Supplies Plus in Watertown, New York! Alexis has so much passion for grooming and is so excited to join this profession. She does excellent work and we know she’ll make an excellent groomer one day!
Alexis’s mentor Jen McCarthy shares with us, “She has been a pleasure to have as a student. She really applied herself to the program and got great grades. She did so well on all her practical tests! A natural talent for this career!”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I knew I needed to work with animals from a very young age. I can remember being gifted with ear cleaners and slicker brushes as a kid rather than Barbies. After beginning college, I learned very quickly I didn’t have the heart to do veterinary medicine, and given that I’ve worked for Pet Supplies Plus for 6 years, I was always exposed to the grooming world. Seeing how excited and playful some pups are after getting pampered, plus how happy you can make pet parents after giving their babies a makeover, it seemed very rewarding. I have absolutely loved it so far.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I enjoyed learning different holds and tricks to keep dogs as comfortable as possible while doing the service, but also in a way that’s efficient for you too.
What are your future goals?
I would really like to get into creative grooming and do full body dyes with carved out designs.
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
It seems very intimidating at first, but don’t hold yourself back. Stay focused and watch other groomers work as much as you can. Watch them groom from start to finish, even for something as simple as bathing. Groomers are always learning new tricks and techniques that make the process much easier, especially when they’ve been doing it for years. I’ve learned a ton of little hacks just by observing!
