Rising Star and Pet Groomer Grad: Meet a Competition Dog Groomer in the Making!
Meet Rising Star and Pet Groomer Grad Alicia Olivares of Pet Supplies Plus in Troy, New York! Alicia is a fabulous groomer and has shown incredible growth during their time in our program. We’re so excited to see Alicia become a full-fledged groomer and start their next journey: becoming a competitive dog groomer!
Alicia’s mentor Suesan Watson shares our excitement, telling us, “Alicia has been a model student, they set a goal for themself, and I have no doubt that they will reach them and beyond. Alicia has worked very hard to show they are dedicated and determined to show they have what it takes to be part of the grooming world. Alicia eventually wants to do show dogs, for now, they love doing stylized legs! Who says that?! Go after your dreams, nothing is holding you back!”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I have worked with animals since I was young, so I knew early on I wanted to make a career out of it. As soon as I learned about dog grooming, I got right to work researching how to get started. I have been on my journey for a few years now and I can confidently say I am passionate about what I do. Not only do I get to see the fruits of my labor on a daily basis, but I am also helping dogs feel and look great. I am constantly challenged, and I am always having fun.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I love learning new things, so this course was more than helpful. I discovered techniques I hadn’t previously known, and I improved skills I already had. My favorite part of this program was my mentor, Suesan. She was so helpful and uplifting when I needed it most. I don’t know what I would have done without her.
Where can we see your work?
I am currently working on building my portfolio, I hope to have a social media page soon. You can also come see me in person at Pet Supplies Plus Troy!
What are your future goals?
Show grooming has been in my heart since I started my grooming journey, so I am working my way towards that. I am absolutely in love with poodles and hope to have my own one day soon as I want to enter creative grooming. My favorite thing about grooming is that it is truly a form of art, I plan to go very far with that. I would also love to do community work, such as free grooms and nail trims for strays or adoptees.
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Do not be afraid to make mistakes, it will make you a better groomer. You are constantly learning and that is a great thing. Be patient with yourself and with your dogs. You can do amazing things in this profession!
