Rising Star Groom Tech Graduate: Amiah Sharp Blends Training and Grooming to Make a Difference

Meet Rising Star and Paragon Certified Groom Tech Amiah Gattenby! At Petsense in Rome, Georgia, Amiah has shown a strong passion for improving the lives of dogs and their owners. Her dedication to learning, attention to detail, and commitment to growth have helped her build a solid foundation as she continues expanding her skills in the grooming industry.

Her mentor, Suesan Watson, shares:

“I am so proud of how Amiah did throughout Level 1. From the beginning she has demonstrated how much she wants to meet her goals of becoming a good groomer. She has stayed well connected and loves to see the notes from each test so she can improve on everything she is learning. I know as she continues on this journey she will continue to rise above and put out her best work. Congratulations, Amiah!”

Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I own a dog training business, Razethestandardk9, and I’ve always had an affinity for bettering the lives of dogs and their owners in any way I can. Grooming has always been something of interest to me. It is a very gratifying process, and I love seeing how happy the owners are by the end of it. The dirt and the grime of some projects are nothing compared to seeing the dog living a better life, especially for some of the more difficult grooms. I’ve always wanted to make as much of a beneficial difference in the dog community as possible, and this has become another wonderful way to do so.

What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I can never decide whether the huge desheds or the matted shave downs are my favorite part of grooming. There is something about giving a dog such a transformation that makes all the hard work worth it. Nail trims are also a favorite of mine. However, I truly love learning, so the part I enjoyed most may have simply been taking on new topics.

Where can we see your work?

What are your future goals?
All I want is to help as many dogs and owners as possible.

Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Work hard and take no groom for granted, you are learning from every dog. Having an understanding of basic dog body language and communication is critical. You will need to know how to correctly deescalate situations with dogs and sometimes owners. Having a knack for service helps keep clients coming back, especially if you plan to own a business. Skill can take you far, but not always all the way. Take your time, focus on your work, and trust your intuition. Nothing worth having comes easy!
