Rising Star and Pet Groomer Grad: A Highly Successful Career Switch With An Even Brighter Future
Meet Rising Star and Paragon Certified Professional Pet Groomer Cherisse Walby of Petsense in Clovis, New Mexico! It became apparent early on that Cherisse was going to be one of our rockstar students. Her previous training as a human hair stylist gave her a leg up, but her success is owed more to her competency and work ethic. We can’t wait to see what she does next!
Just ask her mentor, Suesan Watson, who shares, “Cherisse has been a great student. She was engaged throughout Level 2 and followed what was needed to submit her best work for each skill. Even when it came to Stylized Legs, she met the challenge with such a positive attitude that she passed it the first time. Because of her ability of wanting to learn more so she can provide the best care to the pups she meets, Cherisse will do very well in her salon setting and grow into the groomer she was hoping to be. Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I started a career years ago as a hair stylist, finding the creativity something I was passionate about. Sadly, I wasn’t finding fulfillment in this path, and stepped into the pet industry at an upscale boarding facility, working in both kennels and their salon. My heart had finally found what I was meant to be doing, and I decided to take my previous knowledge, skills, and creativity to dog grooming.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
My favorite part of this course has been my mentor, Suesan Watson. She has guided me, motivated me, and pushed me to better myself as a dog groomer. Even on the hard days in this career, her words reminded me that even on the hard days, this is what I was meant to do.

Petsense in Clovis’ Facebook page. I’m currently building a portfolio of my work, and we will begin sharing photos of the dogs I groom soon!
What are your future goals?
My future goal is to continue my education in grooming by attending shows to learn new techniques I can bring back to better my services further for the clients who trust me with their pets. I hope one day I can introduce my animal-loving son to the world of grooming, so he may one day surpass me in grooming!
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Take the leap! You’ll never know what you are capable of if you don’t take the chance to start such a wonderful and fulfilling career.
