From Bather to Artist: Rising Star Connor J Moore’s Grooming Journey

Meet Rising Star and Paragon Certified Pet Grooming student Connor J Moore! Based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Connor brings passion, self-discipline, and a deep appreciation for the craft into his grooming journey. What started as a simple bathing position quickly evolved into a love for the artistry of grooming, where Connor continues to challenge himself, refine his technique, and grow with every dog he works on.

His mentor, Liz Thompson, shares:

“Connor has been a wonderful example of dedication, growth, and passion throughout his time in the program. Over the past several weeks, he has fully immersed himself in his learning, balancing hands-on grooming, studying course materials, and actively working to refine both his speed and technical skills. His commitment is evident in the extra time he has spent at the facility, consistently showing up with the goal of improving and expanding his knowledge.

What makes Connor stand out is his genuine enthusiasm for the learning process. He has expressed how exciting it has been to go from not fully understanding the imagery and concepts in the material to now confidently applying grooming patterns in his work. That kind of transformation reflects both his determination and his willingness to challenge himself.

Connor is also beginning to experience one of the most rewarding milestones in a groomer’s journey, building relationships with clients who recognize him and are happy to see him. This speaks volumes about the care, professionalism, and positive energy he brings to his work.
Even while navigating the pressures of building speed and managing a growing client base, Connor continues to remain humble, reflective, and eager to improve. His mindset, work ethic, and passion for grooming make him a fantastic candidate for a Rising Star Student, and I am excited to see how much further he will continue to grow in this industry.”

Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I’ve always loved animals, and thought since childhood I would become a veterinarian. At 18 I walked into a dog boarding facility looking for a part-time job with dogs, and they told me there was a bathing opening. I had no idea washing dogs could be a profession, but I almost immediately fell in love with the transformation a dog could go through from a good clean. As I grew proficient in my bathing journey, grooming became more attractive as I began to see the art in it.
And since picking up shears, I’ve fallen in love. I get to give a pup a good experience and make them look good, while also challenging myself and growing in my own way.

What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
The textbooks. I didn’t know I missed school until the massive Notes From the Grooming Table was dropped in my lap. It was intimidating at first to skim through and understand virtually none of the information, but I have realized it’s a great way for me to recognize my own growth as the book became decipherable and finally helpful.

What are your future goals?
I want to grow as a groomer. Not for others, besides the animals of course, but for myself. This has been the most mentally and physically rewarding job and journey I could ask for, and I’m only just beginning to learn. I’ve never been good at judging myself and making dogs and people happy is my selfish confidence boost.

Any advice for aspiring groomers?
There’s a point in learning where you have a picture in your mind of what you want to accomplish, and you may know the steps to get there, but it’s hard or seemingly impossible to execute. The missing factor is time and hands on experience with the pups, and there is no shortcut besides work and dedication to the craft.
