Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad: A Future Master Groomer's Inspiring Origin Story

Meet Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad Emily Saylor of Wilco Farm Store in Canby, Oregon! Emily is the definition of a quick study and we’ve been so impressed with the quality of her work and her professionalism. Stick with it Emily, you’re doing great work!

Her mentor Jen McCarthy tells us, “She has flown through the program at lightning speed! She has done outstanding work on all her tests, both in coursework and on her photo submission tests. I cannot wait to see her in Level 2!”

Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?

I have worked in the service industry many years. I was always a mixologist, or a barista. Although I enjoyed it, I have always wanted to pursue a career working with animals, especially dogs! I still get to talk to people in this industry, but I love that I get to work with fur babies even more. Especially seeing the tail wags and how happy their owner is when they get to go home. Couldn’t ask for a better career path.

What did you enjoy most during your coursework?

Coursework has been very enjoyable so far! Just when you think you know everything about dogs there is so much more to grooming than meets the eye, even the behavior and anatomy of the dog itself. I really enjoy the video lessons they give a very clear understanding.

Where can we see your work?

Wilco Grooming Salon, in Canby, Oregon.

What are your future goals?

I hope and aspire to become a master groomer and get a strong solid foundation that comes naturally while learning along the way. I would love to confidently be able to groom all varieties of dogs and learn more about the canine species in general, I find it fascinating as well as fundamental for working in the grooming world.

Any advice for aspiring groomers?

Be patient with yourself! I am a repetitive learner myself. If you are going in to grooming completely new like I did, know that it takes time to learn a skill like this, practice practice practice. Make sure to have fun along the way, this is truly such a fun creative industry to work in. Enjoy!
