Louisiana Rising Star Combines Technical Proficiency With Creative Thinking
Meet Rising Star and Groom Tech Grad Kate Brower of Petsense in Laplace, Louisiana! Kate is great with animals and consistently turns in high-quality and consistent work. We especially enjoy hearing that she’s interested in pursuing creative grooming, and we’re confident her skills, work ethic, and ability to learn will carry her to greatness.
Her mentor Jen McCarthy agrees, telling us, “Kate has been working hard from the beginning! She asks questions if she doesn’t understand and takes feedback well. She has done so awesomely on all her coursework tests as well as her photo submission tests. She is on pace to finish at least a week early as a part-time student! She seems to show a natural talent already for this career!”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I love the combination of creativity, working with animals, and honing a craft that I get with dog grooming! Any time I can improve the quality of life for a pet and their parent is time worth spending.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I enjoyed working with all the different personalities and skin and coat types. Even within a type like ‘double coated’ or ‘curly’ there are so many variations in texture! Every dog is an individual and I really enjoyed learning how to tailor my approach so that each one can get the most out of their groom.
Where can we see your work?
I’m currently working in the Petsense Salon in Laplace, Louisiana. You may catch my work around town, in the store, or on the store’s Facebook page! I also have a dedicated Instagram account, @cutieparlor, for my grooming work!
What are your future goals?
I am fixing up a facility where I rehabilitate and train unwanted horses. I have ambitious plans for growing and expanding my reach, and I can happily say that dog grooming will play a pivotal role in funding that project! I have a growing interest in the wilder side of grooming too, with non-traditional cuts, colors, and even nail art for dogs. I’m counting down the days until I can start Paragon Level 2 so I can dive into dog fashion!
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Use all the resources available to you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. And if you’re doing something else now but thinking of a career change into grooming, go for it! It’s never too late to start doing what speaks to you.
