Rising Star and Pet Groomer Grad: Talented Young Groomer Begins Exciting Career
Meet Rising Star and Pet Groomer Grad Marin Petersen of Chuck & Don’s in Chanhassen, Minnesota! Marin began her grooming journey while she was still in high school and we’re so glad she’s loving her choice in career. We’re excited to see what she’ll accomplish now that she’s working in the salon!
Her mentor Jen McCarthy shares, “She has been such an awesome student for both levels. Really reads everything thoroughly and asks questions when she wants clarification. A natural talent for grooming for sure! Did very well on all coursework tests as well as photo submission tests. She is going to make an awesome groomer!”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
I’ve been obsessed with dogs ever since I was little. When I was younger I wanted to be a vet, but I realized I had to perform surgeries and euthanize dogs and I decided that it wasn’t the job for me. I was in high school and applied for a team member position at a Chuck & Dons that has a grooming salon. I didn’t know what I wanted to for my career yet, but realized I loved working with the dogs.
After talking to some of my coworkers and managers, I decided I wanted to go through the Paragon program with Chuck & Don’s. I saw the groomers doing their jobs and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. As soon as I graduated high school, I was enrolled in the Paragon program, and here I am!
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I really enjoyed the detailed feedback I got from my mentor! It’s crazy how they can give so much advice from just a few pictures. They’re really supportive. The books are also a great help for grooming everyday pets!
Where can we see your work?
I’m currently working at Chanhassen Chuck & Dons, moving to Apple Valley Chuck & Dons in January. I haven’t started any social media accounts for grooming yet, but hopefully soon!
What are your future goals?
I want to groom for as long as I can. I really want to continue learning and getting better! My goal is to make some good friends in the industry!
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Follow groomers on social media! Even if its a short video, watching different groomers with different techniques can be really helpful to finding your way to groom. If you get discouraged, remember it’s dog hair, and it will grow back. If you’re uncertain about anything, you can never communicate with the pet parents too much!
