From Childhood Inspiration to Career Goals: Meet Paragon Graduate Sarah Stinson
Meet Paragon Certified Groom Tech Sarah Stinson! Based in Rockford, Michigan, Sarah brings compassion, patience, and a lifelong admiration for pet care into her grooming career. Inspired as a child by trips to the groomer with her grandmother’s Schnauzer-Poodle mix, Sarah became fascinated by the transformation that grooming brings to pets. From muddy adventures to polished, happy pups, she developed a deep appreciation for helping animals look and feel their best.
Her mentor, Priscilla Wall, shares:
“Sarah has shown awesome growth in Level 1. She blew me away with an almost perfect curly/wavy test on her very first try! I cannot wait to see all that she accomplishes in Level 2.”
Why did you choose dog grooming as a career?
Growing up, I always loved when my grandma would pick me up from school to go run errands with her, and one of the errands would be bringing her Schnauzer-Poodle mix to the groomer. He would come out looking so clean and super happy. Ever since then, I have been in awe of the transformations of pets that live happy lives digging in dirt, playing in water, or laying in the lawn and then come out clean with beautiful haircuts.
What did you enjoy most during your coursework?
I have loved reading my course books, learning new techniques, understanding the different coat needs of specific breeds, and learning how to apply the right tools for each grooming situation.
Where can we see your work?
You can find Sarah grooming at Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique of Grand Rapids. She also works on the kennel side at Whiskers Pet Resort and Spa in Kentwood, Michigan, continuing to grow her experience with pet care and handling.
What are your future goals?
I would love to one day groom at Whiskers Resort & Pet Spa, and as I begin to retire, continue grooming through at-home appointments or as a traveling groomer.
Any advice for aspiring groomers?
Work at a kennel or boarding facility! I have learned so much about dog handling and reading dog behavior that has helped me in the groom room. Being able to recognize when a dog may be anxious or aggressive helps create a safer and easier grooming experience for both the dog and groomer. Also, have patience. Dogs are like people, they all have different personalities and needs. There will be times when you are not happy with the final result, but every experience helps you learn what steps are needed to provide the best grooming for each dog.
